No big material desires left

What do you do when you have no big material desires left? When you already have a monetary safety net that will serve you in case of an emergency? Your bank balance will grow, but most of it will only go towards your retirement plan.

Retirement and emergencies are both future possibilities. You will save your money for a possibility. This will definitely ease your mind. A minimum amount of security and safety is essential in order to not feel anxious about the future. So let's say you have this fallback money (which doesn't have to be enormous) and you can cover your daily expenses like food, hygiene products and transportation. What if you have enough income to put something aside and don't plan on buying a house or shiny new car, or getting kids? Many people who earn more money than they can spend simply upgrade their lifestyle. You can do this on an infinite scale. But what if you recognize that this does not make you happy? I have everything I need and have no urge to spend more on new things that replace the old things when the old things are still sufficient. What can more money do for me in the moment besides accumulating for a possibility in the future? You could argue that more money will enable you to go into retirement earlier, which is certainly nice. But this is still decades away and definitely not guaranteed.

I don't want to join the rat race and adjust my lifestyle and luxury spending to match my income. Because then I will never have enough. The system is designed to fuel your cravings. There is always something to strive for. Material desires are so easy to create and dangle in front of you because they are so concrete that they don't leave room for the complexities of what it means to live a fulfilling life.

I will be grateful when my life is hit with unplanned expenses, regardless of their source, and I can rely on my savings. But still, this is a probability, and it can hit with varying degrees of financial strain. Should I then spend more money just because I have it? Is that just the way things go?
